(For context, here’s my post on reviewing all the films nominated this year and I also did my own set of predictions here)
Oscars 2021 started with the Original Screenplay award going to Promising Young Woman (unfortunately their only award for the night but deserving) and the Adapted Screenplay award to The Father. Both powerful and deserving picks.
International Feature Film went to Another Round, expected and definitely had to win.
The Best Actor in a Supporting Role was won by Daniel Kaluuya for his power-packed performance in Judas and the Black Messiah. His speech was one to watch, check it out here.
For anyone who’s watched Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom knew they were the expected winners for Makeup and Hairstyling, and Costume Design and they very well won in both the categories.
Chloé Zhao wins a much-expected and deserving win for her amazing direction in Nomadland.
Sound of Metal took home a few awards, including Best Sound, and Best Editing.
The Oscar for the Best Animated Feature went to, none other than, Soul (silently applauding here).
There could be only one winner for Visual Effects, Tenet.
Yuh-jung Youn won the Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role in Minari, which was quite remarkable.
There were a few surprises with Mank, winning the Award for Best Production Design and Best Cinematography (Erik Messerschmidt)
Then came the Song category, with Soul winning the Oscar for Original Score and “Fight for You” from Judas and the Black Messiah for Original Song (H.E.R., Tiara Thomas, D’Mile)
Tyler Perry winning the Jean Hershalt Humanitarian Award, his work being so inspirational and so was his speech.
— then came the final few awards, with everyone wondering why the Best Picture (that usually takes place at the end, is happening before the Best Actor and Best Actress category)
– two reasons that are circulating around are:
1. The creative team were expecting the Best Actor award to be given to Chadwick Boseman and must have prepared an emotional tribute to end the show with.
2. Their contract says that they must finish with the Best Picture category within three hours of starting the ceremony, and since they were running late (as usual), they switched things around.
Nonetheless, back to the Best Picture category, with the expected, yet fantastic Nomadland taking the award.
The Best Actress category was a really tight one, with so many top performances to choose from, and there could’ve been a surprise here, but the Oscar went to Frances McDormand for Nomadland (that streak for Nomadland continues through)
The final award for the night, the Best Actor category. With everyone wondering who would it be, Steven Yeun for Minari, Riz Ahmed for Sound of Metal, Chadwick Boseman for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Anthony Hopkins for The Father, or Gary Oldman for Mank.
Everyone was expecting an emotional moment here, but the Academy Awards did really surprise here, not that his performance was any less, Anthony Hopkins winning the Best Actor award for The Father (with him not being present to collect the award, the show just ended abruptly at this point because there was nothing else left).
And so ended the Oscars 2021.
