On average, we are spending three to six hours of our day on our smartphones, on a daily basis.
For some, it’s less than that, but for some, it’s more.
To even think of it, imagine what happens in those three to six hours of smartphone usage.
Communicating with people, checking your mails, and largely consuming content on the ‘n’ number of social media platforms out there.
Imagine the plethora of content consumed by an individual on a daily basis.
Whether it is Instagram Reels or Instagram Stories or Instagram Posts, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube or podcasts, the volume of consumption is huge.
At the end of the day, you have consumed content on two fronts – either educational or informational, or on the entertainment front which is adding the fun to your life.
What if I ask you, what do you remember at the end of the day?
Or rather how much of it?
We live in the Information Economy, where we feel we have tons of information at our disposal and we learn so much every day, by consuming all this content.
Do we, though?
The interface and the algorithm of all such platforms have been designed with one thing in mind, the individual should be able to consume for hours at a time and shouldn’t realize so.
Sure, we will be able to pin-point a few topics that we remember, if someone speaks about those same topics, you will be able to agree that yes you know this.
However, what if you had to speak about it or write about it? Will you be able to?
Did that consumption add so much value to your life that you gained knowledge and you’re able to put it to use?
Becoming aware of current trends or topics of your interest and becoming learned in them are two totally different things.
Right now, sure we can be aware, but we are not able to become learned in them.
And this is why we are not able to learn anything from social media or rather from our daily smartphone usage.
We are not able to use this volume of consumption to our advantage.
We are not able to use our smartphones to our advantage.
We have to accept that we are flawed and can be put in any maze as and when it deems fit for someone.
How about that as a starting point?
